We found out that we received two D&AD in books. Both were in the Environmental design category. The Future A-Z for Selfridges has been put in the D&AD book for Retail and Services and the onedotzero festival idenity has been put in for installations. Great news!!

We came up with the Oyster Card Wallet Reader idea quite a while ago and kept it under our hats whilst we were talking to TfL about it. When we heard that they didn't have budget to make it happen we thought if we could prove to TfL that there is a real demand for the product this might make them think otherwise. So we posted the idea onto this blog and added it to our website www.davidandtom.co.uk and then twittered it. We were shocked to see the massive positive reaction of the idea on twitter and we then had a look at our website to see whether it had had any effect on the views of the site and we were shocked by the results.

14 views on Monday..hmmm not great.

On Wednesday 5461 views!!! Wow. We were bowled over by the response and thought let's set up a Facebook fan page to get an gauge of how many people really like the idea. We're in talks with TfL and want to go back with a petition to make this idea happen. So if you like it, and want one one day, please help the cause and click 'like' on this link . We appreciate your support and a big thank you to everyone who has clicked 'like' already.

A neat little concept for London commuters.

With the Oyster Card Wallet you’ll know how much credit you have on your card at all times, at a glance. So no more waiting for the bus only to be turned away, and no more walking into the tube gates and holding everyone else up. It’s a simple idea that will help the underground work a little more efficiently.

NEW WEBSITE UP

It's been a long time coming and here it finally is. We've kept it very simple and went with a cargocollective layout, which was really simple to use There's a mixture of work on the site. From work David and I have done since we've been at Wieden and Kennedy to our own personal projects from products to installations for brands like Howies and to products for Honda. There's one other project to come which will be up in a few months time as we're still working away on it. Keep a look out for it as it's starting to look really good. The onedotzero identity has been nominated for this years Design Museum Brit Insurance awards in the interactive category. The identity is up against the Graffiti Research Lab and Jason Bruges studio to name a few.

An exhibition of all shortlisted entries will be held from 17 February to 6 June at the Design Museum in London, category winners will be announced on 4 March, and the winner will be announced at an awards dinner on 16 March. Click here to see more.

3D scanning

Been working on a few projects and a lot of them have been relying on new technology. Now this isn't really a new technology as such but never the less it was fun to play with. A group of us popped down to Inition along Curtain Road in East London. They specialise in a range of stereoscopic plasmas to 3D printing for Architects. Anything and everything 3D.

This was the kit we were playing with which consisted of a range of cameras positioned to take a number of photographs of the subject matter (this time rund it was my head) and a camera that would pick up tonal and colour references which would then be mapped onto the 3D image of my head.

The photo was taken and the profile appeared on screen.

Here's a close up of my multi coloured head.

And the image with the colour and tonal references taken by one of the cameras. You could then spin round the head. From this information they could laser print a 3D version of my head. If you want to see more have a look at there site here.

To complete the community ethos of this years onedotzero identity concept we decided to open source the entire generator, installation software & tools in the hope to encourage further discussion, educate and hopefully see some wonderful new additions/re-renderings of the whole concept.

The application works on a mac or a pc and from this you can play away, generate onedotzero identity images, motion and if you have the know how you can adapt the source code to create new shapes pictures interaction, whatever you want.

onedotzero interactive installation Test

Was up late last night in London Fields working on this test with Karsten Schmidt and the team. We ran the first full test of the interactive identity that will take over the western wall of the NFT Southbank from Thursday next week as part of the onedotzero_adventures in motion festival.

Karsten and Gary Liquid have built an app for the new Nokia N900 which allows the public to send their own personal message to the projector which is made up of the live conversations about the event, and then control and manipulate it. This little test is nothing compared to the 50 metre version we have planned for next week. Here is the teaser.

Selfridges have found X

I'm a little late putting this up but we found the X for our Selfridges Future A-Z. The winning idea is ‘Xtra hours in the day clock’ by Brenda Durham – a clock that can give you 48 hours rather than 24. Useful or what?! An hour of indulgence can now last for two, while that week off you have been waiting for will last like a fortnight.

We all had a long week last week working on the onedotzero posters. Here they are in all there glory and a couple of shots of them in situ. Really pleased with them. The images are snapshots of this years identity which has been created through live streaming online conversations and buzz about onedotzero. The application was built by Karsten Schimdt. Big thanks goes to Karen Jane and everyone else who worked on these. If you have blogged or commented about onedotzero chances are your message will be in the posters. The festival starts on September 9th where we will have a large interactive display for everyone to play with.

onedotzero 2009 Brand Identity

onedotzero is a contemporary, digital arts organisation with a remit to promote innovation across all forms of moving image. Their international festival has been the largest dedicated digital film festival in the world for the last ten years and kicks off its global tour on 9th September in London. We have been appointed to create the brand identity for this year's festival. This year's festival theme of 'convergence and collaboration' inspired us to take advantage of onedotzero's vast fan base and constant, online conversations to create this new identity. We have harnessed dialogue from twitter, facebook, etc, and have channelled the content via specially produced software devised by computational design wizard Karsten Schmidt through colourful 'ribbons' that move organically as if alive. These ribbons gravitate towards invisible paths that then spell out onedotzero's font and logo. It's tricky to explain - have a look at the teaser below!

Nokia N97 Global TV advert

For the last 7 months we have been working on a Global TV advert for Nokia's new Nseries phone the N97. The shoot consisted of shutting down a main road in down town LA for two days, 300 extras, one very large light that simulated the sun, and two months worth of CGI. Here are some photos of the shoot. The Director Oscar Holmedal from Style War and all the CGI magic was courtesy of the Mill.

David and I have been working on this for a little while now. To be exact we have been working on getting a range of products on to the shop shelves for Wieden and Kennedy since we've been here. It all started of with the Christmas Pudding Bin Bags which won a Silver D&AD in Graphics in 2006. It seemed a shame that such a fun and quirky idea wasn't available to buy, so David and I talked to Suck UK and Worldwide Co about producing the bin bags and a few other products.

The Pet Goldfish Bin Bags have been added to the range.

Pass the Salt was designed by Sarah Ginn and Mandy Smith. The little salt seller has a hidden function where the seller can be pulled back and released across the table. The products will be sold globally in places such as Paperchase, Urban Outfitters and Selfridges. See more here.

Selfridges Future A-Z 2109

In February we pitched and won a project to design the store windows for Selfridges’ 100th anniversary. The brief was “What will Selfridges be selling in 2109”. It was a great brief and a chance to do some non-advertising creative work and satisfying to know that we beat some top designers and artists to win the project. The outcome was the future A-Z of products that Selfridges may sell in another 100 years. Here are some shots of the installation.

We've just recently completed the Wieden and Kennedy London's Christmas card. David and I had a chat with Joel Gethin Lewis in the summer and decided to collaborate on proposing a Christmas Installation that in return could work as Wieden and Kennedy's Christmas card. So we had a brainstorm and 4 months later we've completed it. The result is an interactive installation that works by taking a picture of your face and placing it randomly on one of 12 characters (Thanks to Johnny Lighthands for the illustrations), creating a never-ending Christmas chain. You then log on to the site, find your face and email your very own personalised christmas card to all your friend and family... all for free!. Here's a little video of how it works

I've just ordered the new Howies Winter catalogue which features an idea that I ran past David Hieatt last year. I worked on this with Alison who made the Blackboard Van Tour happen.The idea was to create a range of oversized care labels to be put into relevant environments with suggestions of how to look after the beaches, forests, rivers, sea and mountains. Here's a little sketch of the idea

Our new window installation went up this week. We have worked with a young artist called James Capper. After going to his graduation show at the Chelsea College of Art we were so impressed that we invited him to do a piece for our agency window on Hanbury Street.

James has a fascination for industrial and construction devices, designing and building interactive machines with a life of their own. And since this year’s window theme is interaction, we thought it would be a good idea to let people try out one of James’s machines. If you're passing, feel free to have a go. No hard hat needed.

Nokia Headset Competition

After roughly 3 months we have finally finished our first website. <The Nokia Music Almighty Headset Competition went live on October 1st. We pretty much self initiated this project as well. Wieden + Kennedy wanted to produce some physical headphones for the Music Almighty campaign. After a conversation internally, we suggested that the best way to achieve this was to produce a competition where the public can design their own headphones and then physically make the best 5 designs which would go on to be exhibited across all the flagship stores. After pitching the idea to the client we got the go ahead.

We sourced the judges from design and music backgrounds, which consist of Felix Buxton from Basement Jaxx, Dick Powell founder of the design agency Seymour Powell, Eddi Yipp the founder of Adfunture in Shanghai, Tokyo Music Lab who are a music label under the Wieden +Kennedy brand and Tej Chauhan creative director of Chauhan Design Studio.

We have designed the website so anyone can design a pair of headsets using the Style Palette where you are able to choose from a range of materials colours and parts. Alternatively you can use Freestyle where you can download the template and use any medium possible.

As you can see the gallery is filling up with some great designs, Fifty pages to be exact. The public award their favourite designs with stars. The 10 designs with the most stars are shortlisted for the judges to choose their favourite 5 designs which will then go on to be made into a fully functioning pair of bespoke headphones.

The competition finishes at the end of the year so you have a few months to show the world your designs. Thanks to all the judges and the team we worked with on this project to make this a success, Daniel, Eze and Anna. Thanks guys.

Since this year’s theme for Wieden + Kennedy's window displays is ‘interaction’ we thought it would be a good idea to approach the interactive design course at the prestigious Royal College of Art and ask the students to submit some ideas.We spoke to Brendan Walker (www.aerial.fm), course leader and interactive specialist, who put forward a very simple brief to his students, ‘engage the passers-by’. As you would expect the entries were top class but Susanna Hertrich was by far our favourite and walked away with the prize money that we provided to make it happen. Susannah's simple and charming Installation consists of a garden of windmills that magically come to life when people walk by. Nice.

We have been working on quite a few projects recently (hence the reason for the lack of posts). This is one project we have been working on for a few weeks now.

Its for the a London based charity called Broadway who help the homeless. They told us that if its one thing that the homeless need its a fresh pair of socks. In a bid to collect as many socks as possible for the charity we have hung a magic washing line which grows every time a pair of socks are donated.

Nokia Green Room title sequence

I've been busy working on various projects at Wieden and Kennedy. One project that we have been working on is the Nokia Green Room title sequence. We finished it a few weeks ago and we are really happy with the result. We had roughly 6 weeks to find the director, animator and illustrator for the idea and make it happen. Luckily our chosen illustrator, Will Sweeney, was available.

We then chose Steve Scott and Dan O'Rourke from Not To Scale to direct and animate the piece. David and I were busy signing off characters components and sharing and agreeing on ideas for the animation with Steve and Dan as well as overseeing the logo which was designed by Johnny Lighthands.

The idea behind the sequence was to fill the small box on screen full of music genre non specific musicians, show them relaxing and drinking then suddenly switch to an on stage performance which is really the essence of the programme. There is so much going on that you want to see it over and over again to spot new things. Its only 20 seconds long so don't blink you might miss something. Click play to see more. Rat Race

David and I are have been working with the new WK Side team on their idea for the window display at Wieden and Kennedy. Its called the Rat Race. The window display consists of three dimensional tubes which represent a localised area of the tube map. Inside the tubes are eight rats who are running around the tubes. This idea took a while to come off the ground but we're really happy with the result. And by the look of things the rats are enjoying it as well. Here are some snaps of the installation.

Guardian F1

I thought I'd post our first TV ad for the Guardian, which was on about three weeks ago. I've been a bit busy hence the lack of posts recently. The TV spot was made with a company called Tandem with an animator called Tobias. Tobias worked on the Tim Burton animated film the Corpse's Bride. The ad was based on the fact that there are four british hopefuls in the tournament this year. All four helmets sing the national anthem through car revs, which is normally played on the podiums. A little nod to our hopes that one of the four brits will win the trophy. No guesses who.

HONDA Glass

I thought I would share mine and David's first piece of bought work at Wieden and Kennedy. The HONDA puzzle glass for the dealerships. The glass was designed to sit with the new Honda Problem Playground campaign. We also wanted to come up with something that would prevent people from using plastic cups at the dealerships which was interactive and engaging.

So as you can see at one angle the letters look jumbled but....

when you line them up at the right angle HONDA is revealed.

Wieden's Wood

For this years Christmas card at W+K they have decided to go down the environmental route and have produced a website where everyone is welcome to grow their own tree and decorate it as they want. You have to water it every day (bit like a tamagotchi) and all the trees live in Wieden's Wood. Here's what it looks like.

And here's what my tree look like

We've also designed the window in line with the website to promote it using recycled internal waste. One side is painted like to look like the site the other is honest showing what the set is made from.

Vinyl Figures

We have started to look into patnering up with a designer called Eddi who owns his own comapny manufacturing Vinyl toys in Shanghai. He's done some work with the Shanghai office and David and I were introduced to him a month ago. We are about to start designing some characters with him which is really exciting. Campaign Party

Today was the Campaign Dinner Party at Wieden and Kennedy. David and I were asked to think about how we could exhibit the Wieden and Kennedy year book of 2007. We came up with a few ideas for the party but really pushed one which consisted of 300 helium baloons, where each one held one page of the book. The result was a sea of floating pages above the dining room table for people to look at. Here are some snap shots of what it looked like.

David and I started our new venture at Wieden and Kennedy to bring our 3D backgound to the table. We've had our first week and have met some really inspiring people. We got our first three briefs today. Lets see how we can twist them. Does it have to be a billboard? Really looking forward to seeing what we can achieve.

I was sent some photos of the van in the post on the weekend from Alison at Howies.

Here's Alison on the skate tour with the van in the background. I came up with the idea and Alison made it happen. I looked through all the photos and thought I'd post a couple of my favourites by Jamie Stoker. Really nice shots.

I'm going to submit the van in for next years D&AD awards and I'm thinking I might have to use a couple of these shots. Jamie Stoker if your reading this can I have your permission to use these? Thanks. Loving your work.

We had the auction yesterday. It was amazing to watch our work being auctioned but also to watch Banksy's work being sold which in total went for a record sale of £545000. Anyways back to the chair. Here are some snap shots of what happened.

Auction Preview

Here are some of the photos of the preview auction at Bonhams. It was amazing to see the chair amongst some of the biggest names in art and design. From Ron Arad to Banksy and Damien Hirst, some amazing pieces of art and design were on display. Wednesdays the auction so fingers crossed it does well. Whilst we were there we met some really interesting people. We are debating whether the guy in glasses is a certain stencil artist. Do you know this man?

Scratch London

I did this installation 4 years ago, I've been meaning to post this footage of it for a while. Only now have I found time to upload this film of the installation onto You tube.

Scratch London was commissioned by the OXO Tower and Totally London. Frames were scratched out and left blank for the public to draw their view of London, resulting in a completely one off window display design.

Scratch London was shortlisted for the Bombay Sapphire 2004 international glass prize.

I went to meet my girlfriend the other at Westbourne park and got a phone call from Alison from Howies letting me know that they were doen at the XBOX skate park with the van so I popped down to check it out. It was on the last leg of the tour and it looked great with everyone's comments. Apparently Green Peace phoned Alison up to say how great the idea was. I was really chuffed. So from what was a sketch in my little note book had now turned into a physical living thing that people can interact with.

Howies skate tour

I sent Alison from howies this wing mirror which my friend David had sprayed for me. I thought she would like it. The skate tour started at 6am this morning and is going to make its way around England over the weekend and early next week. I'm going to hopefully meet up with the howies team next week for dinner which they kindly invited me to. It'll also be the first time I will see the chalkboard van. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished article.

I saw this a little while back and my friend reminded me how good it was by showing it o me. Its a bit long but the illustration is so good. You feel a little bit sad when they paint over the master pieces they create. Great bit of stop animation though.

Howies 10 summer stunts

This is an idea I came up with for howies the clothing brand. They wanted me to come up with a few ideas for 10 summer stunts to promote howies and to get peple to think (I will post the other ideas soon).

So I spoke to David and Claire Hieatt who own howies and they really liked my idea for a chalk board van, to capture the publics views on envronmental issues, which was brilliant as it was one of my favourite ideas from the ones I had come up with.

Originally I wanted to use a Camper Van but this proved to be too expensive and too much like fat face. Luckily howies had a van to use which was going to be large enough to transport there sponsored skaters and a photographer. So what was merely an idea on paper had turned into a Skate Tour to make people think about Nuclear Power, "So is it green, or is it dumb?".

So this is the final design. I'm waiting to see the final outcome as it all has to be completed by August the 13th so fingers crossed it looks good! Cant wait to see what people will write.

The Chair that Grow's story continues

Just thought I'd put a post up regarding the progression of the Red Nose Chair my friend David Bruno and I designed and created for Comic Relief and Knoll furniture.

We managed to reupholster the Bertoia chair by asking people to donate a pound and for every pound that was donated a nose is added to the chair. As a result we reupholstered the whole chair thanks to work colleagues friends and the general public and raised £720.00 for Comic Relief which was an amazing result. Not only that we have approached Bonhams in Mayfair to auction the chair in there contemporary design and furniture auction in October to raise even more money for Comic Relief and they have said YES. A great result.

We have also been chatting to a famous knighted fashion designer who is wanting to back the project which is brilliant news but we are waiting to here from his marketing team with what this may involve. Keep you posted.

This project has been a success in many ways for both David and I. Not only has this been a great learning curve for both of us, we have managed to create a great piece of design, an event which will create press coverage for Comic Relief and Knoll Furniture and not to mention raise lots of money for Comic Relief. A success all round. I have a feeling this project will grow even more if we let it.
